Utopia vs. Dystopia
Tuesday 6th March, 6:30pm
LCB Depot, Rutland Street
FREE
Utopia: an ideal place or state
Dystopia: a society characterized by human misery
What will the future hold for society? A perfect world where gene therapies create virtual immortality, robot labour makes work a thing of the past and artificial intelligence brings about world peace? Or will the computers set out to exterminate humanity, with the help of catastrophic climate change and a new generation of weapons of mass destruction? Are we heading for a utopian dream, or a dystopian nightmare.
Imagining the future is all part of a days work for science fiction writers Ian Watson and Paul McAuley. Join them as they discuss our possible tomorrows in this special event presented as part of Café Culturel and the Fantastic! live literature season.

Science fiction and fantasy can take us from ancient worlds of myth to the farthest star in a distant galaxy, but how much are writers of the fantastic influenced by the real world. Mark Chadbourn, author of The Age of Misrule trilogy, bestselling science fiction novelist Pater F Hamilton and world fantasy award winner Graham Joyce reveal how fantastic fiction can have its roots even in places as real as Leicester. Presented by Leicester Writers Club as part of the Fantastic! Event season.
